Temporary foreign workers in British Columbia’s Okanagan region are facing financial and employment uncertainty after the Bald Range wildfire near Summerland forced thousands of residents to evacuate. Migrant worker organizations estimate that around 100 workers were evacuated, with many agricultural workers going days without pay. Employment and Social Development Canada said affected workers can receive support with temporary housing and replacing identification documents, while some Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program participants may be transferred to other employers. IRCC noted that temporary residents affected by natural disasters now have up to six months to apply to restore or extend their status. Workers with employer-specific work permits may also seek new employment and apply for another work permit, and eligible workers can start a new job while their application is processed under an existing public policy.
