Conservatives propose ending the TFWP to prioritize employment opportunities for Canadians

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre announced plans to permanently abolish the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), citing unprecedented youth unemployment and wage suppression. The proposal comes as TFWP permits reach historic highs under Prime Minister Carney's government, with 105,000 new permits issued in the first half of 2025 alone — despite Employment Insurance claims increasing by 7.4% and nearly 400,000 Canadians experiencing long-term unemployment. The Conservatives plan to maintain a separate program for essential agricultural labour while implementing a transition period for low-unemployment regions, ultimately aiming to redirect employment opportunities to Canadian workers.
