Canada's population reaches 41.8 million in the second quarter of 2026 as growth slows

Canada's population reached an estimated 41,798,407 on July 1, 2026, according to the latest quarterly demographic estimates from Statistics Canada. The population grew by 80,343 people, or 0.2%, during the second quarter of 2026. Permanent immigration served as the primary growth driver, adding 99,148 newcomers to the country, while the population of non-permanent residents decreased by 18,875 due to fewer international study and work permit holders. Natural increase contributed an additional 12,959 people, with births exceeding deaths. Year-over-year population growth slowed to 0.5%, marking the lowest July-to-July growth rate recorded in over a century.
