International visitors boost Canadian tourism spending to 28.4 billion dollars

A new Statistics Canada report shows that real tourism gross domestic product grew by 0.5% in the first quarter of 2026. This growth outpaced the broader Canadian economy, where overall real gross domestic product increased by just 0.1%. Total tourism spending in Canada reached 28.4 billion dollars during the quarter. International visitor spending rose by 0.9%, which helped offset a 0.2% drop in domestic spending by Canadian residents. The sector also added jobs, with tourism employment increasing by 0.4% in the first quarter. Early data from April and May indicate that travel numbers continue to rise.
