House of Commons committee urges deadline for clearing immigration backlogs

The House of Commons committee urges Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to set a deadline for clearing its application backlog and implement accountability measures. Committee chair Sukh Dhaliwal calls for a special task force to address the challenge. As of October 31, officials faced 2,166,800 applications, with around 936,500 considered backlog. The IRCC aims to process 80% of applications within service standards, accounting for complex cases or additional information requirements. The committee began studying application backlogs and processing times in February, hearing from 44 witnesses by the end of November.
