Global Affairs Canada reports that approximately 55 Canadians are currently held in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities as families struggle to navigate complex bureaucratic processes for their release. Two notable cases include Cynthia Olivera from Mississauga, who was arrested during her citizenship interview in Los Angeles, and Paula Callejas from Montreal, who was detained while finalizing her work visa. Both women have experienced multiple facility transfers while their families face mounting legal fees and limited communication. The detentions coincide with the Trump administration's intensified immigration enforcement policies, which aim to increase daily arrests from 650 to 3,000.
