U.S. Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib has revealed that more than 200 individuals, including young children, were held in makeshift detention facilities at the Port of Detroit near the Canadian border. Following a visit to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sites, Tlaib reported inadequate conditions, including limited bathroom access and extended stays beyond the 72-hour limit. The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan expressed alarm over CBP's lack of transparency and denial of legal support access, raising concerns about deportations without due process. Under the Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA), asylum seekers must claim protection in the first safe country they enter, prohibiting them from crossing the U.S. into Canada (or vice versa) to make refugee claims. Ms. Tlaib reported that border officers informed her that a significant majority, around 90 percent, of detainees were apprehended after accidentally crossing into Canada.
