Report reveals 1,350% surge in anti-South Asian Hate speech on Canadian social media

A new study documents an alarming 1,350% increase in online hate speech targeting South Asians in Canada. The report analyzed social media posts on platform X between identical periods in 2023 and 2024, finding hateful content jumped from 1,163 posts to 16,884. Researchers noted a significant spike during Canada's recent federal election, with former NDP leader Jagmeet Singh facing particular targeting. The report identifies Canada as being portrayed as a "cautionary tale" by global far-right influencers regarding immigration policies. This online hatred correlates with Statistics Canada data showing a 200% rise in police-reported hate crimes against South Asians between 2019 and 2023.
